Political Awareness

I am Dr. Darryl Nettles. I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University. Recently I received my Doctorate in Public Administration with a concentration in Public Policy/International Studies from Valdosta State University. I graduated from Augusta University with a master’s in public administration also. I have 17 years of experience as radiation safety technician/hazardous material technician (auditor), business manager, and research operations coordinator (building manager) at Augusta University. In addition, I have 10 years of experience teaching political science which includes Contemporary International Conflicts, International Relations, and mathematics at various institutions.

Some years ago, I graduated from Stillman College, an HBCU, with a BS in chemistry and a minor in mathematics/history. I was also an analytical chemist at Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC for years. I have taught developmental mathematics at Strayer University, Augusta Technical College, and Aiken Technical College for twenty years. For the last six years. I have been working as a postdoctoral research fellow with the cancer prevention, control, and population health group. Working mainly with community engagement/outreach and education/training. My areas of research interests have been allostatic load, social determinants of health, health policy, environmental justice, prostate cancer prevention, and community-based research, which includes health
disparities. I am also very active with many community-based organizations locally and at the state level here in Georgia. A fun fact about me is, “I grow tropical Chinese evergreens, aglaonema. I have at least 16 different varieties, which fill most of the space in my home.
