On September 3, President Xi Jinping hosted 26 world leaders at a massive military parade marking 80 years since Japan’s surrender in World War II. Among the guests were Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The event gave China an opportunity to showcase both its military strength and its diplomatic connections.

Xi used the parade as a “show of force,” warning the world about the choice between “peace or war.” Speaking to more than 50,000 spectators in Tiananmen Square, he declared, “Today, mankind is faced with the choice of peace or war, dialogue or confrontation, win-win or zero-sum.” Xi added that the Chinese people “firmly stand on the right side of history,” according to Reuters.

Cutting-Edge Military Technology

The parade highlighted troops and an array of new military equipment, including hypersonic missiles, underwater drones, and weaponized ground drones known as “robot wolves.” China also revealed a new unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV), informally called the Type B drone.

This drone features a tailless, modified delta wing with diamond-shaped tips. Its nose includes a chin that extends back toward side-mounted engine intakes. Experts believe it can fly at supersonic speeds and travel long distances, giving it the capabilities of a high-performance aircraft without the need for a pilot. Its flat, sleek design also improves stealth compared to conventional aircraft.

A Patriotic Display

Helicopters carried banners while jets soared across the sky in a 70-minute showcase. The event concluded with the release of 80,000 “peace birds.”

Xi met publicly with Putin and Kim Jong Un for the first time as a trio. Putin thanked Kim for sending soldiers to support Russia in the Ukraine War, and Kim promised to continue helping Russia.

The parade was not only a message to the international community but also a rallying point for national pride. Xi declared that China’s rejuvenation is “unstoppable,” aiming to stir patriotism at home while projecting strength abroad.
