This Week in Global News

This week’s two major stories are the G7 Summit in Canada and the conflict between Israel and Iran.

G7 Summit

The G7 Summit is the annual meeting of the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, and the United States. Several topics were discussed during this three-day meeting, but many nations shared a primary goal: to engage cordially with President Trump. In addition to the seven member nations, leaders of several other countries also attended. In the past, international agreements have been made at these summits. Key discussion topics at the summit included:

  • Affirmation of commitment to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Enhancing cybersecurity
  • Global challenges, including climate change and economic security

Israel-Iran Conflict

Beginning on Thursday last week, Israel launched a series of air strikes that targeted the main nuclear and military facilities in Iran out of concern for a strengthening nuclear program. Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, claims the only way to reduce the threat from Iran is to go to war. However, Iran has said that it has no intention of creating a nuclear weapon. Israel’s United Nations Ambassador stated that Iran had “enough material for multiple nuclear weapons,” which is what sparked the initial attack from Israel. Repeated strikes between Israel and Iran persist, causing approximately 250 total casualties.
