An air force jet crash-landed into a school in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Russia and Ukraine met for peace talks in Istanbul, Turkey, for the third time. Finally, Gaza is experiencing mass starvation as Israeli blockades prevent citizens from reaching food sources.

Jet crash in Bangladesh

On Monday, July 21, a Bangladesh air force training jet crashed in a private school in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. There are 31 recorded deaths with at least 170 injuries. Many of them are students of the school. The military jet took off from an air force base and hit the school building because of a supposed “technical malfunction.” The jet caught fire upon crashing, which set the school ablaze.

Tuesday morning, students held protests at the crash site, advocating for compensation for the families of victims and demanding a pause on training flights in the region. They also demanded action from government officials. Bangladesh observed a day of national mourning on Tuesday in memory.

Russia and Ukraine meet for peace talks

Following President Trump’s 50-day deadline, Russian and Ukrainian leaders met in Istanbul. These peace talks lasted only 40 minutes. Before this meeting, both groups had met in Istanbul twice. The outcome was normally an exchange of prisoners of war without much progress towards a ceasefire.

This latest talk resulted in no new progress. However, President Trump has committed to sending weapons to Ukraine with the help of European allies. This comes after the EU revealed further sanctions on Russia. President Trump continues to grow frustrated with Putin. “My conversations with him are very pleasant, and then the missiles go off at night,” President Trump explained.

Mass starvation in Gaza

The World Health Organization has declared a mass starvation event in Gaza because of aid blockades. Over 100 humanitarian organizations have requested that Israel allow for food, water, and medical supplies to reach Gazans. However, Israeli President Issac Herzog says that they are acting “according to international law” and that Hamas is responsible for the famine.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that all 2.1 million Gazan citizens are experiencing food security, including 900,000 starving children. The UN also reported that in the past two months, 1,000 Palestinians attempting to reach US and Israeli-run food distribution centers have been killed. The head of UNRWA has described the situation in Gaza as (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) as “hell on earth.”
