Musk’s Government Relationship Remains Shaky

In the past few weeks, Elon Musk’s criticism of President Donald Trump has reached new heights. Musk takes issue with Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which remains on the docket of the United States Senate. For those not in the know, Musk entered the Trump administration as a “special government employee,” a role created by Congress in 1962. SGEs serve in hyper-specific roles and keep their positions for up to 130 days.

Musk headed a temporary department called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was tasked with eliminating wasteful spending within the government. Musk was also a big part of Trump’s election campaign, spending over $250 million on the campaign.

Musk’s tenure as an SGE wrapped up on May 28, leaving the White House and the president behind him. Upon leaving, Musk began to post tweets opposing Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” and its removal of electric vehicle manufacturer tax credits. Musk called the bill a “disgusting abomination,” and even alleged the president’s name was present in the “Epstein Files.”

As of last week, Musk has apologized on X for his comments toward President Trump, saying he “went too far” with some of his public attacks. Trump publicized his indifference toward Musk in the past week, but hopes they can reconcile. Musk has since come out in support of Trump’s crackdown on the protests in Los Angeles. He has since supported Vice President J.D. Vance’s X post, saying that the President “will not tolerate rioting and violence.”

While the current relationship between the President and the Tesla CEO seems rocky, the future could tell a different story.
